Naples is Italy at its most raw, vital, and extraordinary. The birthplace of pizza, home to the world’s finest street food, gateway to Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast, and set against the brooding backdrop of Mount Vesuvius β a day in Naples is genuinely unlike anywhere else in the Mediterranean. It’s loud, chaotic, passionate, and absolutely magnificent.

π’ Port Overview
Naples is one of the best-located cruise ports in the Mediterranean β the Stazione Marittima terminal is right on the city waterfront, steps from the historic centre. Castel Nuovo is a 5-minute walk; Spaccanapoli (the historic spine of the city) is about 20 minutes on foot. The port is also the gateway to some of the most spectacular destinations in Italy: Pompeii and Herculaneum are 30β40 minutes away; the Amalfi Coast is an hour; Mount Vesuvius 45 minutes; and Capri island is a 50-minute ferry crossing.
π‘ Insider Tip: Naples itself is a great city to explore independently β but Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, and Capri all require a full day and careful timing to do properly. Be realistic about what you can combine. Doing Pompeii AND the Amalfi Coast in a single day means rushing both. Pick one big excursion and do it well.
1. ποΈ Pompeii β The Buried City
β± Time needed: 3β5 hours on site | π΅ Cost: β¬18 entry; guided tours from ~$55 | π Distance: ~30 km south, 30β40 min by train (Circumvesuviana) or coach
Pompeii is one of the most extraordinary archaeological experiences in the world β an entire Roman city frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, preserved for nearly 2,000 years under layers of volcanic ash. Walking Pompeii’s streets β past bakeries with millstones still in place, thermopolia (fast food bars) with their serving counters, bathhouses, temples, theatres, and the haunting plaster casts of its victims β is a profound and deeply moving experience that cannot be replicated anywhere else.
π‘ Insider Tip: Pompeii is huge β the site covers 66 hectares and you could spend an entire day there. A guided tour ensures you see the highlights (the Forum, the Villa of the Mysteries, the House of the Faun, the plaster casts) in the time available. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water β the site is largely unshaded and extremely hot in summer.

2. π³οΈ Amalfi Coast Day Trip
β± Time needed: Full day (7β8 hours) | π΅ Cost: ~$75β110 per person including transport | π Distance: ~60 km south, ~1 hr drive
The Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the world β a dramatic limestone cliff face dropping to the Tyrrhenian Sea, the road clinging to the rock above tiny fishing villages of pastel-coloured buildings, lemon groves, and terraced vineyards. The towns of Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello each deserve hours of exploration. Positano’s cascading houses and beach are iconic; Amalfi’s cathedral and the chaos of its piazza are extraordinary; Ravello’s Villa Rufolo gardens above the sea are among the most beautiful in Italy.
π‘ Insider Tip: The Amalfi Coast road is one of the most spectacular β and most congested β in Europe. Traffic in summer can add hours to the journey each way. A boat tour along the coast is often a better option β you see the cliffs and villages from the sea (the best angle), avoid the traffic entirely, and can stop for swimming.

3. π Naples Pizza & Street Food Tour
β± Time needed: 3β4 hours | π΅ Cost: ~$55β80 per person including food | π Distance: Spaccanapoli/Centro Storico β walkable from port
Naples invented pizza. Full stop. The Neapolitan pizza β certified by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity β is made with San Marzano tomatoes, fior di latte or buffalo mozzarella, and 00 flour, stretched by hand and cooked in a wood-fired oven at 485Β°C for 60β90 seconds. Eating a margherita at one of Naples’ historic pizzerias (L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele, Sorbillo, Di Matteo) is a pilgrimage. A food tour of Spaccanapoli also covers fried pizza (pizza fritta), sfincionello, cuppΓ (fried food in a cone), sfogliatella pastries, and the extraordinary coffee culture of the city.
π‘ Insider Tip: L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele on Via Cesare Sersale only serves two pizzas β Margherita and Marinara. It has been making them since 1870. The queue is always long but moves fast. No reservations. Order the Margherita, eat it standing if necessary, and understand why Naples takes pizza so seriously.

4. π Mount Vesuvius & Pompeii
β± Time needed: Full day (7β8 hours) | π΅ Cost: ~$65β90 per person including transport | π Distance: Vesuvius summit ~45 km, ~1 hr drive
Combining a hike to the crater of Mount Vesuvius with a visit to Pompeii is one of the most dramatic and memorable full-day excursions in the Mediterranean. Vesuvius is one of the world’s most dangerous active volcanoes β the last major eruption was in 1944 β and the hike to the 1,281-metre summit crater is an extraordinary experience: the steep path through barren volcanic rock, the sulphurous smell, and then the jaw-dropping view into the enormous caldera and across the Bay of Naples below.
π‘ Insider Tip: The hike from the car park to the Vesuvius crater rim takes about 30β40 minutes each way on a steep volcanic path. Wear sturdy shoes β not sandals. It can be windy and cooler at the summit than at the base. The views on a clear day across the Bay of Naples, Capri, and the entire coastline are extraordinary.

5. π Capri Island Day Trip
β± Time needed: Full day (6β7 hours) | π΅ Cost: ~$85β120 per person including ferry | π Distance: ~50 min ferry from Naples or Sorrento
Capri is one of the most glamorous and beautiful islands in the world β a limestone rock rising dramatically from the Tyrrhenian Sea, its clifftop town of Capri filled with designer boutiques and shaded piazzas, its waters an extraordinary deep blue-green. The Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) β a sea cave where the water glows with an ethereal blue light β is one of the most famous natural wonders of Italy. The island also offers the Gardens of Augustus, the ruins of Emperor Tiberius’ Villa Jovis, and the chairlift up to Monte Solaro for panoramic views across the Bay of Naples.
π‘ Insider Tip: The Blue Grotto can be closed due to high seas β check conditions on the day. The boat trip into the grotto is very short (5 minutes) and the entry fee is separate and expensive (β¬18). The island itself β the clifftop walks, the Piazzetta, the sea views β is the main attraction regardless of the grotto.

π Going It Alone: Independent Explorer Tips
Naples itself is a great independent destination. The historic centre (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is walkable from the port: Castel Nuovo, Via San Gregorio Armeno (the Christmas nativity street, extraordinary year-round), the National Archaeological Museum (finest collection of Roman artefacts in the world, including Pompeii treasures), and the food of Spaccanapoli. The Circumvesuviana commuter train from Garibaldi Station runs to Pompeii (β¬3.20, 30 min) and Herculaneum (β¬2.50, 20 min) β cheap and very manageable independently.
π½οΈ What to Eat & Drink Ashore in Naples
- Pizza Margherita β eat it here. San Marzano tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, fresh basil, wood-fired oven. The original and still the best. β¬5β8 at any serious pizzeria.
- Pizza fritta β fried pizza dough stuffed with ricotta, salami, and provola cheese. Street food at its finest and deeply Naples.
- Sfogliatella β Naples’ signature pastry: a shell-shaped flaky pastry (riccia) or smooth pastry (frolla) filled with ricotta, semolina, and candied citrus. Get it hot from the oven.
- Espresso β Neapolitan coffee is the best in Italy, which means the best in the world. Stand at the bar, pay β¬1, drink it in two sips.
- CupΓ (fried food cone) β a cone of fried mixed street food including zeppole (fried dough), fried pizza dough, and various fritti. Sold everywhere in Spaccanapoli.
π‘ Practical Tips for Naples
- Watch your belongings. Naples has a well-earned reputation for petty theft. Keep phones in front pockets, bags in front of your body, and don’t wear expensive jewellery visibly in the city streets.
- Book excursions in advance. Pompeii, Amalfi Coast, and Capri tours fill up quickly in summer.
- Traffic on the Amalfi Coast is severe in JulyβAugust. Consider a boat-based Amalfi tour to avoid the congestion.
- Pompeii in summer is very hot β carry at least 1.5 litres of water, wear a hat, and do the site in the morning.
- Eat pizza here. Not Rome, not Milan β Naples. This is where it was invented and where it is still made best.
