๐ Going It Alone: Independent Explorer Tips
Cozumel is one of the easiest Caribbean ports to explore independently. Downtown San Miguel is walkable from Punta Langosta in minutes. Taxis are metered by zone โ agree on the price before you get in. Renting a scooter or golf cart is a popular and easy way to explore the islandโs southern and eastern coasts. The wild, uninhabited eastern shore offers dramatically different scenery from the resort side โ Chen Rio beach bar is a local institution for fresh fish and cold beer.
๐ฎ Food & Drink Ashore
- Tacos al pastor: Cozumelโs street taco stands are exceptional โ pork marinated in achiote and pineapple, carved from a vertical spit and served on small corn tortillas. $1โ2 USD each.
- Cochinita pibil: Slow-roasted pork, a Yucatรกn speciality, served in most local restaurants with pickled red onion and habanero.
- Ceviche: Fresh local fish marinated in lime juice with tomato, onion, and chilli. Order it at any waterfront restaurant.
- Michelada: Mexicoโs great beer cocktail โ beer mixed with lime, hot sauce, and salt over ice. Perfect for a hot port day.
- Agua fresca: Fresh fruit-infused water sold from street carts throughout San Miguel โ hibiscus, tamarind, and lime are the classic flavours.
โจ Insider Tips for Cozumel
- Book early. Peak season (NovโMar) sees 3โ5 ships daily. El Cielo snorkelling and Chankanaab dolphin encounters sell out weeks in advance.
- Independent operators save you money. Booking through Viator saves 30โ40% vs. cruise line shore excursion prices โ with smaller group sizes.
- Reef-safe sunscreen is required at all marine sites. Mexico enforces this โ bring your own.
- Allow buffer time. Always be back at the pier 30โ45 minutes before all-aboard.
- Try the eastern coast. Rent a scooter or golf cart and explore the wild, undeveloped eastern shore.
